The Chris Saiz Point the Way Foundation hosted its 2nd Annual Basketball Showcase at Cinco Ranch High in early May 2013. Approximately 60 signed and unsigned high school basketball players, their coaches, and coaches from college campuses all converged in early May 2013. At stake was an opportunity to participate in The Chris Saiz Point the Way Foundation 2nd Annual Basketball Showcase.
“The event was successful,” says Michael Saiz, president of the foundation and father of the foundation’s namesake Chris Saiz. The younger Saiz was a star basketball player at Cinco Ranch High School and played AAU basketball with many of the participating players from all corners of the Greater Houston Area. He passed away in December of 2011 as the result of a single car accident in which he was a passenger.
In his honor the foundation holds two signature events: 1.) a basketball showcase to give players an opportunity to continue their athletic careers at a college or university, and 2.) a charity golf tournament that raises funds for a scholarship program involving select high school seniors from submitted applications. Recently, eight seniors from Katy and the Houston area received generous scholarships to assist with college tuition and expenses.
Dirk Minniefield, a former NBA player and Chris Saiz’s AAU basketball coach was instrumental in organizing the tournament-style format of the showcase, which also included a slam dunk and 3 point shooting contest. “We saw a lot of talented players at the showcase,” says Minniefield. “We will not know about any signings for a few months, but we know that last year we were successful in gaining the attention of some college coaches that resulted in five signings.”
Many of the foundation’s Board of Directors were generous contributors, including Jeff Pennington, Mitchell Rubin, Bruce Morris, Marsherria Wilson, and the Saiz family. “This event is close to our hearts,” says Michael Saiz. “We could not have pulled it off without so many generous sponsors, groups, and individuals.” The boys from The Alpha Charity League were a huge help to the overall success of the event, as were many others including The Lady Bird NCL Chapter, Dana Hastings, Clara Parker and sponsors Safeway Driving and the Westheimer Parkway Chick-fil-A.
With an expanded scope of offerings, plans are already underway for next year’s showcase to be held again around the same time of year. The Chris Saiz Point the Way
Foundation Charity Golf Tournament will be held at the spectacular River Ridge Golf Course in Sealy again this September 30, 2013. For more information about these events or to find out more about the non-profit organization, please visit www.chrissaizointthewayfoundation.org.
